My curious nature trying to understand myself through my art, free form dance and meditation brought me to study Transpersonal Art Therapy at the College of Complimentary Medicine. This course drew together all that I had explored and experienced over the past 20 years, giving me the fundamental skills and tools needed to move forward in life doing what I love - combining all my creative talents together and stepping into the next chapter of my life as a Transpersonal Art Therapist
I first started my work placement in the areas of Domestic Violence and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. I found that the tools I had been given in my Art Therapy training worked on so many levels and in such simple ways for clients to see and understand parts of themselves that lay dormant and unconscious.
I find that the use of colour plays such a valuable role in the work I offer. I use colours as a form to communicate with whenever I can. When words or even images are too hard for clients to work with at times, colour has an amazing impact. A similar example would be dream interpretations. Each person relates differently to each colour depending on their experience and perceptions. The use of colour in group work and in private sessions is a simple yet effective tool for anyone to relate to. Body movement through dance and even used as a tool in session to express emotions has been my passion for some time now. It's fascinating the memory our body holds.
My experience in Expressive Free Form Dance, Sound work and Art, especially through Abstract work, has been a wonderful outlet for me to grow and develop over the years. The opportunity to create and hold the space for others to express emotions, either through drawing, movement or sound in a safe environment has been truly a humbling experience.
Using the Transpersonal model as a foundation to work from, helps to shift and release stagnant energies for clients in so many ways and on so many levels.
Working in this Transpersonal level, a shift may occur in an area that was unconscious for years, the body can hold onto memories and through this liberating process so much can be achieved. Even without a word being spoken.
The aim of this work is to bring the body, mind and spirit back into balance. I personally have experienced this transformation many times through my own life and with some very gifted teachers and facilitators. I now understand, through my own experience how to navigate a client through these difficult times so they may then feel confident to move through life during times of crisis.
As well as offering the Barefoot Dance Create Connect groups, I've also had the incredible opportunity since I graduated to create and facilitate various art therapy workshops. I've been running a very rewarding ongoing 4 week program for Parramatta Mission on the Central Coast since 2019. Workshops designed for their Family and Career Mental Health Program, and Mental Heath Recovery Programs.
Another privilege was to facilitate and design workshops for a youth program Novaskills was running in 2018. This was a component of their Links to Learning Program. Prior to that in 2014, I was honored to create and facilitate a 6 week, Self Esteem Program for Bateau Bay Neighborhood Centre, a wonderful group and one of the first large groups of 10 participants I ran.
I've never said no to an opportunity when I'm asked to run workshops. The challenge to put together various processes for each individual group is something I love doing. I've now worked in areas of mental health, careers of mental health, domestic violence and youth work. Women's groups and a very brief experience with a children's prototype program and was a provider for the NDIS offering one-on-one sessions specifically catered for each clients needs and abilities.
I've set up my practice on the Central Coast in NSW since I graduated in 2013, in the lovely sea side suburb of Wamberal. I see client in my home, a place where most clients feel inspired when they enter and is always a place in progress. I still see NDIS clients but am not a registered provider. Most of my NDIS clients are self managed or plan managed these days.
With such a busy schedule as well as a growing family, I've now stepping into the roll of Yiaya (grandmother in Greek). There's never a dull moment being in a Greek family, which brings me endless joy. I paint when I can and creating in new ways, I've always loved to stretching the boundaries, exploring and learn new things. Coming from a family of Dressmakers, Tailors and Artist, sewing and art is in my blood, a natural way for me to express myself and my uniqueness.
Creating now with all of these amazing transpersonal tools has heightened my connection to my art and my life in so many ways.
Art, in its many forms, serves as the bridge to reconnect.
